The Challenging Career Of An Online Professor

A career as an online professor can be an extremely rewarding one. If you have one specialist subject about which you are passionate, you can make your career by teaching it to new students. You can derive great satisfaction from being able to devote your working day to the subject which is dear to you, and you can also feel satisfied in the knowledge that you are passing on your enthusiasm and expertise to a future generation. It is a difficult career to break into, but if you are the right type of individual the reward levels are very high.


Exactly how hard such a career will be to obtain depends very much on where you are right now. The only people who can seriously expect to break into online teaching are the ones who already have proven career experience in their chosen subject. If you have yourself been educated to doctorate level, that will be a huge bonus. Many online colleges are asking for five years of quality experience before they will even give you a chance.

If your resume is not filled with success stories and a proven track record, you are going to have to build your career from the bottom up. You will need to decide on one subject, and specialize in it completely. You will need formal qualifications, and then some solid related experience. This is certainly not going to be a quick process. You will also need to be computer literate, so if there are gaps in your experience here you will need to fill them. The good news is that this is cheap and easy to do.

Even with a high quality resume and good computer skills, it is still a struggle to become an online professor. The positions are very hotly contested, so you will need something to make you stand out from the crowd. Learn PowerPoint well, as it can help you develop the type of presentation which is used a lot in online learning. Not only does it give you a good structure to the course you are teaching, it also allows you to add relevant input as it is needed.

Creating some good presentations to demonstrate your ability will help you to stand out. Even if you are appointed, you will probably have to start by teaching basic entry-level courses before you are given free rein to teach your specialist subject. This needs to be seen as an opportunity to impress the college with your ability to communicate the material effectively. Once you have managed to get your chance to teach your chosen subject, there is no limit to where your career can take you. You can try to progress into college administration, or you can stay with your specialist subject as an online professor.
